NASA Roman Space Telescope launches to map a billion galaxies

sci.news ↗
NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched August 30, 2026 aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Kennedy Space Center, beginning a three-month journey to the Sun-Earth L2 point 1.5 million km away. Equipped with a 300-megapixel infrared wide-field camera and a field of view 100 times larger than Hubble's, Roman is expected to generate 1.4 terabytes of data daily — the highest rate of any NASA astrophysics mission to date. The mission was delivered ahead of schedule and on budget, with first public images targeted for early 2027. Roman represents a major leap in humanity's ability to survey dark energy, dark matter, and potentially life-bearing systems at cosmic scale.
