Edward Kang, a 17-year-old high school senior from Bergen County Academies in New Jersey, developed RetinaMind, an AI tool that diagnoses autism spectrum disorder and ADHD by analyzing retinal images with 89% accuracy. The system uses ensemble learning — feeding retinal images to multiple CNN models and combining their predictions — to distinguish between the two disorders rather than simply detecting one. It won second place and $175,000 at the 2026 Regeneron Science Talent Search. With no existing physical biomarker tests for autism or ADHD, a non-invasive retinal imaging approach could enable earlier diagnosis and intervention for the millions of children affected by these conditions.
